The Perfect Face - Golden Ratio Beauty Calculator

Can you really place beauty to numbers?
As a girl with a mathematical edge, studying Calculus in high school, I want to introduce you to the Golden Ratio because studies of top models have shown that they have countless numbers of this ratio in their faces.

What is this ratio? Well to be exact it is 1.6180339.... and you can find it by specific measurements in your face. Here is my own face rank based on the Golden Ratio:

If you follow my blog then you know that I not only like to give you the secrets of beauty but I like to explain the science behind why it works and makes sense. This isn't new, the ratio was used in the Great Pyramids over 4600 years old, but I do break it down in chapter 4 of my book,  Face This: Real Advice from Real Models, Photographers and Makeup Artists.

This number, universally recognized as ideal, is usually rounded to 1.62. It is also known as phi (Φ) in Geometry, Fibonacci numbers in India, feng shui in Asia, and divine proportion. This ratio 1:1.62  is nature's symmetry and occurs naturally in life. Da Vinci himself used it when he drew the perfect human male body in his famous work the Virtruvian Man. The premise behind this is that the closer a face or object is to the golden number 1.62, the more beautiful it becomes.

Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but according to a study from the University of Nebraska, a smaller nose and chin, along with a larger distance between the eyes and a smaller mouth width are deemed desirable traits for women. Females were proven to be seen as the fairer sex, rated more attractive by both men and women.

How to Determine Golden Beauty
With the math behind it, the symmetry of your face can be measured. The closer this number is to 1.62, the more beautiful it is judged to be subconsciously. The simplest measurement is the length of your face divided by the widest part of your face. There are countless ratios that can be derived, but the web site above will generate a computer calculation online of a few of these ratios, from your uploaded photo for free, and give you some feedback. You might also decide to use this site if you are trying to select the best image from a recent photo shoot to use as your new profile picture!

Do It Yourself Version using a few more calculations:

a = Top-of-head (1) to chin (2) =  cm
b = Top-of-head (1) to pupil (3) =  cm
c = Pupil (3) to nosetip (4) =  cm
d = Pupil (3) to lip (5) =  cm
e = Width of nose (6 to 7) =  cm
f = Outside distance between eyes (8 to 9) =  cm
g = Width of head (10 to 11) =  cm
h = Hairline (12) to pupil (3) =  cm
i = Nosetip (4) to chin (2) =  cm
j = Lips (5) to chin (2) =  cm
k = Length of lips (13 to 14) =  cm
l = Nosetip (4) to lips (5) =  cm

Now, find the ratios. 1.62 is golden.
a/g =  cm
b/d =  cm
i/j =  cm
i/c =  cm
e/l =  cm
f/h =  cm
k/e =  cm

Using the Golden Ratio in Dentistry

When the 2 front teeth form a rectangle with a Golden Ratio measurement (height to width of the center 2 teeth of 1.62) it is perceived as a perfect smile. Another ratio used is from the width of the first tooth to the second tooth and a third using the width of the smile to the third tooth from the center. Visit the site of Dr Eddy Levin for more on the Golden Section and Dentistry.

The Mask of Divine Proportion

Dr Stephen Marquartdt developed a facial mask as a measurement of classic beauty to help plastic surgeons align facial features for more symmetrical accuracy based on a series of rectangles, triangles and decagons.

From Queen Nefertiti in 1350 BC to Angelina Jolie today, you can see for yourself that they both share similar facial proportions conforming to this beauty mask. I guess that beauty may be timeless after all ... or maybe it explains the countless number of plastic surgery clones. You Decide.

    2. Actually it does. They just didn't include any pictures. People are beautiful regardless of "ethnicity". This also goes for ugly.

      Delete
    3. Ethnicity DOES come into it -- sorry if this does not fit into your politically correct agenda.
      This website is however mainly for Caucasian faces (being Egyptian Nefertiti would have been Caucasian), so Caucasian faces are obviously going to be featured.

      I doubt many people here would think Australian aborigines as outstandingly beautiful. Try to think rationaly.

      Delete
    4. You do realize that Queen Nefertiti is not Caucasian don't you? Seeing as this short post featured her as well, maybe it isn't political correctness that is your issue. I sense ethnic insecurity in your comment. It gets a little stale and jaded when simple beauty posts are misconstrued as being ethnically charged. Especially in this day and age where literally every race is celebrated in each owns beauty. This is a post on the scientific calculations of beauty.... Adaptable to ANY race. In any case we all should know by now that beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

    5. These features are more European features and according to this mask most of the non white people won't fit. I'm sure there are many acceptations (people who have similar structures to white people) correct at all.

  9. This is a very dry examination of mathematical constants in nature as applied to the face. Any classically trained artist would recognize that beaty is not sheerly relegated to mathematical ratios. Hunams intrinsically recognize patterns in nature (including on the body) and there are many ratios that make things orderly and beautiful. But somehow drawing closer to this "perfect ratio" does not make a person more beautiful, the closer they are to those ratios. And this can be verified by the countless beautiful persons who violate these ratios. I hope women, or men for that matter don't walk away with the impression that the further you are from these ratios the less likely you are to be beautiful.

    All people adhere to a physical kind of geometry, after all God is perfect in order and Man was made in his image. But God is also a master artist, and as master artist he knows the range he can work with, and He is not a slave to math, rather math and geometry is his bondservant.

And so do millions who believe that its a lot easier to believe in the existence of God than to believe that chance and probability brought about the entire universe in perfect harmony as we see it today. U need a LOT more faith to believe that you could put all the parts of a machine in a mixer n then shake it until it becomes the complete entity that it is intended to b on its own ! Kudos 2 ur faith Bro Craig! :)

    4. Maybe I'm missing something here? Surely the proportions of an ideal face are difrerent for each sex.
      The proportions of the lower face will be greater for men, but this does not seem to be mentioned here.
      The 'do it yourself' method described here, and the uploadable photo method will surely only work for women?

    ins = document.getElementsByTagName("input")
    a = ins[0].value
    b = ins[1].value
    c = ins[2].value
    d = ins[3].value
    e = ins[4].value
    f = ins[5].value
    g = ins[6].value
    h = ins[7].value
    i = ins[8].value
    j = ins[9].value
    k = ins[10].value
    l = ins[11].value
    abs = Math.abs
    gr = 1.6180339
    score = 10-abs(gr-a/g)-abs(gr-b/d)-abs(gr-i/j)-abs(gr-i/c)-abs(gr-e/l)-abs(gr-f/h)-abs(gr-k/e)

  36. Please forgive me for saying, but this software is NOT accurate. Nefertiti and Aishwarya Rai did not get as high as marks of some of you on this site. Those are faces that are far above average in look. Nefertit=7.6 Aishwarya Rai=8.76. It is fine to have fun with, but keep in mind if you rank a 9, that does not necessarily mean you are beautiful.

    BTW, I put a photo of Sarah Jessica Parker and she ranked higher than Nefertiti. That is not possible at all.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I received 8.58. I think part of it is the fact that you have to be PINPOINT accurate on where you placed the dots. That, and whenever I take a photo, I have a habit of trying to adjust my face so much it looks pretty bad. When I switched the photo out for something I didn't do/my friend took and gave to me, I scored higher. Nonetheless, happy with what I scored!

    ReplyDelete

  40. This doesn't measure a person's facial beauty. It just measures the facial ratios from one angle of a person's face - and a face can be looked at from hundreds of angles. For example, noses look longer from a higher angle and shorter from a lower angle. Don't like the length of your nose? Change the angle the photo is being taken from. Etcetera.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. chargyse - - - Important point! Many ''good looking actors only look good from a few angles -- then you notice he/she has a receeding chin, big nose, week jaw line. And of course most people have a 'good side' and a 'bad side'.
      Another point to remember is that any close up photo will have a large degree of distortion. To get an 'accurate' photo the camers should be about two feet away. That's why hand held 'selfies' always look so terrible!

    ReplyDelete
  44. This is immensely stupid. If you look for any ratio in nature, you will find a lot of examples of it. Google "golden ratio myths" sometime and you'll see. And hs calculus obviously makes you a math expert.

  60. Okay, so I think I did this wrong. I ended up with 9.92. No way. These are my measurements:
    a) 20.7cm
    b) 9.8cm
    c) 4.5cm
    d) 8cm
    e) 3.4cm
    f) 9.3cm
    g) 13.2cm
    h) 7.2cm
    i) 7.2cm
    j) 4.7cm
    k) 4.6cm
    l) 2.5cm

    And now my ratio calculations:
    a/g) 1.57
    b/d) 1.22
    i/j) 1.53
    i/c) 1.6
    e/l) 1.36
    f/h) 1.29
    k/e) 1.35

    And then:
    1.57+1.22+1.53+1.6+1.36+1.29+1.35=
    9.92?

    Please help me. I know I got my measurements right because I did them multiple times and I always got 0.5 away each time I measured. So I must have done something wrong calculating. Please help!

    1. You did your math right. Please remember that yes, this "golden ratio" thing is about symmetry in your face. It has nothing to do with how beautiful you are. You can be one of the most beautiful people in the world and not have a very symmetrical face or length-to-width ratios. Just keep in mind that, yeah, you have a symmetrical face. But you might not be necessarily beautiful!

      Delete
    2. Agreed -- as a man, my face comes up with a 9.0 to 9.7 score (using different websites and formats), but women certainly don't stare at me or flirt with me!
      Other things, such as undefined lips, palish eyebrows, facial expression, lack of confidence etc probably 'spoil the effect'.

      Delete
    3. Your maths was correct, you just forgot to apply the last step: divide this number by 7 (amount of ratios calculated), and then that number by 1.62 (the 'perfect' number).

      If I apply this to your equation so far, I get 1.417 out of 1.16, and then 8.8 out of 10.

      Delete
  61. Im 1,55 ;-) Yay.. Thanks internet... Bwaah.

    e/l = 1.6 cm
    f/h = 1.4 cm
    k/e = 0.5 cm

  67. They're not bullshit, they're miscalculations, or should I say incomplete calculations. People saying they scored 9.4 for example, actually scored 1.34 out of 1.62 (the golden ratio), which is equivalent to 8.3 out of ten, which is still a 'high' score, but not as high as they thought it was. Most people who scored high 8's and 9's are actually 7's and low eights, pretty much average.

    a/g = 1.41
    b/d= 2.02
    i/j= 1.54
    i/c= 1.36
    e/l= 1.21
    f/h= 1.02
    k/e= 1.29
    I'm guessing people got their numbers by adding all their number together so mine comes out to 9.85. but if multiply 1.62 by 7 because thats how many boxes there are you get 11.34 so this technically isnt a scale from 1-10 so if it was I'd be a 8.51 ( I subtracted 1.34 from my original answer.

  80. I got 9.99 which I think is absolute stupidity. My ratio would therefore be 1.42. I think I'm the most ugliest thing on the planet. I only did this test because everyone keeps saying I'm really pretty and should be a model but I hate how I look in pictures. I honestly cannot be a 9.99.
