Palette-Cleansing Neutrals: A Fresh Take on Spring

The new nude palette takes a natural spin giving skin a sunset glow that lifts us right out of winter and gives us a much-needed complexion pick-me-up. If the weather won't give me sunshine and warm breezes then I will heat things up on my own. The new way to wear neutrals is a far cry from "nude".  It’s not about contouring or defining, but blending and blurring earth tones to create a warm, sheer, sophisticated look that works for every occasion from work, to weekend, to special occasions and is one of those "can't go wrong" palettes.  Easy to apply and even easier to wear.

Look for desert-colored shades that aren’t muddy or flat, that have undertones of rose, peach, or gold, depending on your own skin color.  Products that glimmer or highlight are perfect for night looks or vacation and can be layered over daytime shades of matte golds, plums, or chocolate. Skip lip and eye liners and create depth by blending.  Keep the lips a warm neutral rather than a nude so they don’t disappear.  Groom the brows, wear a defining mascara, blend mocha, taupe, and copper shades on the eyes.

I've been shopping and trying out all the new products, and these are my top choices that I will use all spring and summer, day to night, work to vacation, to create this year’s most versatile makeup looks.

That Beach Glow Tho - New Body Glow Products

It’s the holiday weekend and that means that the kick off for summer, ready or not, is truly here.     Everything is exposed now, including your body skin, so having a prep plan in place is key.  Fortunately there are lots of great new products to protect from sun damage, fake a vacation-worthy tan, and highlight your limbs to give the impression you spend more time on a beach than anywhere else.

Firsts things first: exfoliate your skin to reveal a primed layer for a self tanner.  Start slow and build it up over two weeks and then maintain it throughout the summer.  Self-tanners now come in sprays, mousse, creams, and oils.  Try Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Mousse which comes in three different depths of color and build it up over a few days to reach exactly the shade that looks authentic on your skin.  Tan-Luxe THE BUTTER is an illuminating formula that enhances your own skin color while imparting a safe tan.

We all know the drill that we need to use at least an SPF of 30 broad spectrum sunscreen re-applied every two hours or after swimming or sports activities, and finding the right formula that doesn’t turn your skin chalky can be tricky.  To enhance your skin’s glow try Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray in SPF30.  For a more active day whether it’s at the beach or otherwise, try MDSOLARSCIENCES Quick Dry Body Spray with their proprietary SolSci-X SPF 40 UVA-UVB formula.  Regardless, keep re-applying your sunscreen to protect your skin from skin cancer and free radicals that cause premature aging.  You will still absorb feel-good vitamin D while avoiding permanent damage.

Hot on the trend of facial glow products are specifically formulated body treats that give a subtle shimmer to shoulders, legs, and collarbones.  Try body beauty expert’s Sol De Janeiro’s Glow Oil which comes in two shades, Ipanema Sunset and Copacabana Bronze, and feel like you are right there on a Brazilian beach - no one does beach beauty quite like the Brazilians. For a rose-gold glow lightly spray the areas you want to highlight with Herbivore Rose Quartz Illuminating Body Oil.

Warming Trend: Desert Hues are the New Nude

The nude makeup palette is still going strong but it is evolving and changing in line with the season.  Spring and summer’s new nude is inspired by the desert’s warm, deep sunsets, terra-cotta earth, and golden tones.

Contour takes a back seat to well-blended bronzers and highlighters.  Start with self tanner if your complexion is pale. (Note: you need to use self tanner all over your neck, décolletage,  and shoulders so you don’t look like you are wearing a mask.)  Follow up with a bronzer that gives a warm flush and apply it right into the hairline.

Use a highlighter on your temples, along the top outer edges of your cheekbones, down the center of your nose, the center of your chin, and a tiny bit in your cupid’s bow of you upper lip.  You don’t want to look like you are trying to glow in the dark, so start with a light touch of highlighter and build it up gradually.

Go for the desert equivalent of the smokey eye using warm sunset hues and coppery tones, well blended and applied on both the top and the bottom eyelids.  Use a dark matte crayon liner to define the eye, rather than a precise liquid liner.  Frame the eye with a well-groomed brow to really draw attention and complete this dramatic look.

A deep nude lip works best for each version of the desert palette.  Whether you are wearing a monochrome look for day, or a stronger sunset look for evening choose a lip shade that is slightly darker than your own lip color in a semi-matte finish.

These shades are the perfect warming trend for spring and summer beauty, and depending on how liberally you apply the products, these desert hues can take you from work to weekend.  Consider it the easy version of the nude palette: just keep blending and don’t be afraid to use your fingers to achieve the perfect sun-kissed “I just came back from vacation” look.

Summer's Hottest Glam Jet Set Beauty

For some women, skipping their beauty routine just because they are planning to lounge at the beach or pool is not an option.  Let’s face it: there are some luxury retreats where slathering yourself in zinc and calling it a day just won’t cut it.  You may be on vacation but there are still selfies to be taken and a certain glam factor to be maintained.  Can you imagine lounging poolside at the Hotel du Cap, or strolling the ports of St. Tropez or Positano with a bare face, shining from sunscreen, looking more like you are at summer camp than on a luxurious getaway?  I didn’t think so.

Summer glam beauty doesn’t need to be time-consuming or glaringly gauche if you focus on just one feature and keep your hair off your face so it doesn’t compete for attention.  Start with a hydrating serum (try La Mer The Revitalizing Hydrating Serum) to amp up the glow.  Look for a moisturizer with antioxidants to protect the skin from damage or drying out in the sun. (try Fresh Cosmetics Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream with Super 7 Complex).   Follow up with a tinted CC cream with SPF that evens out the over all skin-tone without a full coverage look (try IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+).   Brush your brows and use a waxy pencil to fill in bare spots and set with a clear gel.  You want your brows to be groomed but not made up or exaggerated (try Nudestix Eyebrow Stylus Pencil and Gel set).

For a sensual lip try a pigment-rich coral which sets off glowing summer skin and looks amazing in warm light (try Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick Collection in Rose Dahlia).  Keep your eye makeup to a minimum so your lips are the focal point.  Give false lashes a holiday too and just wear waterproof mascara (try Clinique Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula).

A soft pastel metallic eye with a touch of gold reflects the light making your eyes pop rather than receding with darker shadows or contouring, for a dramatic but understated eye (try Makeup Forever Artist Shadow Eyeshadow in Nile Green Satin, and Golden Beige),

Don’t forget your oversized sunhat and statement shades – after all you will love taking them off for a big reveal.

It’s GLOW TIME! The BEST Self-Tanners for the Ultimate Summer Glow!

The perfect summer glow is the best beauty look for warm weather and these Face This product picks couldn’t be easier to use, giving you a top to toe glow and sexy beach hair.

Face:  Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha-Beta Glow Pads are infused with vitamin D, and alpha and beta hydroxy acids to exfoliate and help clear the skin of sunspots and blackheads.  Apply using the odorless towelettes for a streak-free glow.

Hair:  Bumble & Bumble Surf Infusion spray gives the perfect texture to hair to make soft waves.  Spray the product on the palms of your hands and gently work it though sections of damp hair.  Either braid you hair or put it up into multiple small buns and then either air dry or blow dry on the lowest heat setting.  Let you hair down and brush with your fingers rather than a hairbrush.

Legs:  Yes of course you could simply use a body self tanner on your legs, but when there are products designed specifically to enhance your legs to make them look amazing, why wouldn’t you?  Start with Say Hello to Sexy Legs Tinted Glow Gel all over your legs and follow up with the Illuminating Fluid applied straight up the front and down the middle of the back of your legs to highlight them which visually lengthens them.  Admit it – you want this.

Body:  Easy application is key when you are trying to reach all of your body, and it is vital that the formula is streak-free so that you don’t leave telltale marks in spots you can’t see yourself.  Tarte Brazilliance Plus+ Self Tanner + Mitt uses proprietary odor-blocking ingredients, and it’s key ingredients exfoliate the skin as it tans, prepping it for a glow that lasts longer since it penetrates deeper into the skin.

Build up your tan over time, or just glow for a weekend.  No fuss, no streaks, no smell, easy application, and skin nourishing ingredients, with beach waves that are simple to do, means more time for summer fun instead worrying about how to achieve model-like beach beauty.  You’ve got this.

                                                             XOXO  Shelley
